I’m coming alone—is that okay?

Of course! It’s actually encouraged. We’ll pair you with other solo players and make sure you feel comfortable. It’s a great environment to meet new people and enjoy the game together.

What if I have never played before?

No problem! Our classes are designed for complete beginners. We have a team of four instructors and keep the groups small, so everyone gets plenty of personal guidance. We also provide easy-to-follow materials and allow lots of time for questions, so you can learn at a comfortable pace.

Who will be teaching the class?

Abby, Sarah, Maya, and Maggie are four friends who have been playing mahjong together for a while now and have spent a lot of time teaching friends and family. Mahjong nights have become a meaningful part of our friendship. As our interest in the game grew, we dove deeper into the educational side and felt inspired to help build a mahjong community in St. Louis.

Where do you get your teaching information?

Our teaching materials and rules are based on official American mahjong resources to ensure accuracy and consistency. We have also created resources to simplify the game and make it easier to understand.

What is the difference between American mahjong and Riichii Mahjong?

American Mahjong (what We Mahj teaches) is played with a larger tile set that includes jokers. Players build hands based on combinations listed on a yearly card, and each round begins with a tile-passing phase often called the “Charleston,” where players exchange tiles before play starts.
Riichi Mahjong originates in Japan. It uses a smaller tile set without jokers. Instead of following a printed card, players work toward completing a standard hand structure of four sets and one pair.
